The Walls are talking. . .

Chloe Sevingy's hallway covered in Kelly Werstler's Trellis.
One of my close friends is moving into her first new home with her fiance.  When talking about the interiors revamp she keeps mentioning WALLPAPER (yes, it comes out in all caps).  I love wallpaper but it is tricky and you need the lowdown before making a choice.
  • First things first. . . the "i just want to wallpaper half the room" needs to be out of your vocabulary.  When wallpapering, the general rule is to paper the entire space otherwise your room looks incomplete and jumbled, the balance would be totally off. (of course there are always exceptions)
  • The casual living room should be off limit, this is where you and family spend most of your time as well as possibly being the largest room in the house.  Paint is the hands down better choice for a calm comfortable feel.
  • Bedroom wallpaper can also be tricky especially if the bedroom is used often, as people can tire of such boldness, and wallpaper isn't easy to come down.
  • The best places for wallpaper are hallways, entries, bathrooms, dining rooms, guest bedrooms, and kitchens.  To add a punch as well as fun to the house.

I love congac, chocolate and cream.

Shand Kid black on black adds tons of depth to this bathoom. . . love the footstool, now that's REAL life.
Choosing wallpaper. . .
  • when picking a color scheme take the natural lighting (day AND night) into consideration- also choose a color that looks good on you. . . why not be flattered in your own home?
  • when picking a pattern; a rule to go by is- the smaller the room the bigger the print, while when papering bigger rooms keep prints slightly smaller size.  Never go small!  There is no "story" or wow factor in small print wallpaper.

If you choose a large floral like this be sure to add geometric lines in accesories to "crispen" the room.  Love this.

Tiny bathrooms are perfect for wallpaper.  They add wow factor to an otherwise ignored space, ultimately making your home feel larger!

Not my favorite, I've always had issues with paisley, but the execution is dead on.  Whimsy is given boundaries with hard white lines.

A vintage "collected" room can be updated with a great print.
Oh.  and ALWAYS hire a professional. . . they can accuratly measure the room, taking pattern repeat measurments to account.

A Grandy Chandy holiday party. . .

The best way to spice up your holiday dinner party is by adding an amazing focal point, right?!!  Nix the played out bowl of pinecones and the cornicopia, you don't have room for them anyway!  Go for an amazing new chandelier and hang it where the drop is slightly above guest's sitting heads.  You will have room for the schmorgasboard underneath and fabulous sparkly eye candy to enhance the glittery wine eyes of your guests!

Raise your glass. . .

I'm dedicating this post to two of my very old friends Benini and Lorraine.  They currently reside in the hill country on the outskirts of Austin, further than those famous city limits, in the most beautiful hilltop home with a collection of art that is aweing.  They are a beautiful artist couple who inspire all who come in contact and have recently opened their private sculpture ranch for limited public viewings.  But this story doesn't start with a hilltop sunset.  It's starts in a small moutain resort town at the scene of a wreck.

Close to 20 years ago my parents were the witnesses to the bewitching-hour crunching of a poor old lady's car in downtown Hot Springs.  Giving their statements, little did they know their good deed was being watched out the 3rd storey window of a firey Italian's streetside residence.  Through his thick accent they suddenly realized they were being invited up.  For coffee, of course.  His waving sea of gray hair greeted them and as he introduced his wife who mirrored the look with long wavy locks of salt and pepper.  Striking was an understatement.

The collections housed in their 10,000 square foot historic residence included not only art, but a library to impress, home interiors that seemed effortlessly chic, and a fridge full of the most delectable foods. . . a lots of STRONG coffee.  But the one handed down was the passion for Murano.  The looooong staircase leading up to the residence from the streetside gallery had been covered with a huge piece of glass that displayed their Murano ashtray and bowl collection.  The affect of these sparkly orbs and globs of color as you walked under them upon arrival was the most amazing greeting.

Through the years not only has my relationship with these special people grown but with the help of my ever so ardent the collector-mother our collection and passion for these Vintage pieces of design history has grown.  This collection is constantly moving throughout our store as we have decided to share our passion.  The heavy weight of these amazing pieces of art allow them to go anywhere in your home for a burst of sparkle and color.  I use mine for jewelry, matchbook holders, and catch-alls for my husband.  Enjoy!

All Vintage blown glass from the isle of Murano.  Prices from $55.

We had a party. . .

To celebrate my Quarter Centennial. . we had a party!  Or partay, if you'd rather.  One long table with 40 sit down dinner guests.  It was the perfect time to shine up the silver, press the linens, and pull out the china. . . yes, between my mother and I we had 40 place settings. . . only in the South, right?  Our concept: a family style Italian potluck.  Guests brought their favorite entrees from local Italian restaurants so well all could test favorites.  It couldn't have been tastier or less stress.  Pasta, Pizza, Shrimp Chicken, Artichoke- whosa-choke?!  Mmmm-mmmm.  Instead of gifts guests brought wine and champagne selections for toasts to everything from Best Wishes to Football prayers.  Mustaches were welcomed.

The beautiful chandy hanging you wonder? . . . I must admit was my handywork and is now on display/forsale in the store.  It IS huge.  Luckily, an event next door boosted our late night festivities to join the band in a Birthday song and in "Calling those Hogs".  Nothing better than 500 extra guests to ring in your birthday. . . as long as you don't have to clean up after them!

Having the only private patio downtown has surely paid off!

A special thanks to all who attended and celebrated and especially the Hubs, Emily and Heather my private photogs and Jen for all the help.

What's in a Frame. . . .

A client was in the other day with a concern about an heirloom, an antique lace piece.  The heirloom couldn't be used as an everyday textile (once attached to her greatgandmother's linen sheeting) due to it's age a frailty.  So I got to thinking.  A way to store, share, and exhibit special textiles is easy, just frame and hang!  Whether it is an antique doily in your bathroom or your old cheerleading uniform hanging in your daughter's room you can keep these textile memories for the family to see.  The one thing you don't want to do is date a room with the piece so try coupling older pieces with contemporary frames and furniture.  This is an easy and inexpensive way to add color to your walls and depth to your home.  Now. . . to get that sequin twirler leotard out of the closet for some sparkle!

Antiqued Framed lace makes a fabulous statement in this bedroom.  Coupled with contemporary lamps, the aged looked is freshened for all ages!  source unknown.  Black Tat bolster, Matteo, available through special order at VSMobley.

It's Cactus-Hot Outside.

Every minute spent outside these days seems like one of tourture.  When 98 degrees reads on my car thermometer I find myself making excuses to put off errands and stay inside.  And now, with the Baby Girl it's a race to the finish when it comes to getting "geared-up" and entering any kind of store- though now it is more and more often the fabirc store.  I'm like a little mouse scurrying to get everything together, Roe in stroller, car off, and a sprint to the A/C.  Though, I have found inspriation through the misery.  Cacti are cute, prickly, found in the desert (which is close to dessert- something I can never turn down) and green (a great color and wonderful new social trend).  Here are my picks for a Cactus-Hot day:

Matthew Williamson "Tribe" Rug for The Rug Company,

"Cactus" Flash Drive, Lukas Koh

Cactus Wallpaper $150 per roll, Portland based company, Makelike

"Prickly Pair Chair", Valentina Gonzalez Wohler

Pinky on the Brain

My grandmother has inspired me. As a once self-termed "neutralist" I am taking a turn toward color. Color in everything. Now, I'm not as bold as one might think. . . I proceed with caution as this is new territory. This is quite a large step for me as friends and family have noticed and it is PINK that has been getting to me as of late. The nostalgia of my Barbie induced childhood has been creeping its way back into my life as ToysRus trips fill my schedule due to an evergrowing Baby Girl. The other day I came across a Barbie display in my local TRUs and it was a page out of WWD! I was seriously upset when I discovered that I didn't have my phone to capture the amazement (in order to send it to my style maven, LovelyCity). I sat there for a TWO w...h...o...l...e minutes staring. The thought of purchasing one of the "little black dress" beauties even fluttered through my mind. . . but so did the last Twilight book. . . .
